The New VW Microbus; Everything we know so far!
We here at Kombi Campers really do love all of our vehicles whether it’s old Susie, a classic 1973 Westfalia, early bay window VW campervan or the newer California models (see Finch and Skye). So it should come as no surprise that we are also excited for the release of VW’s new Microbus and from what we’ve heard so far it could prove to be a real game changer.
Starting off we know that it will be released with a few options in terms of engine. With turbocharged, four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines; a hybrid is a strong possibility. The possibility of an all-electric model comes off the back of VW’s recent diesel disaster and the decision makers in Wolfsburg are perhaps looking to reinvent the company a little bit. There are rumours that an all-electric model based on the automaker's flexible front-drive MQB platform could be a priority in Volkswagen's future. However all that we know for definite so far is the typical gasoline and diesel engines but don’t be surprised if they do announce an all-electric model.
The interior of the vehicle is said to be of a minimalist design, there are 3 gauges and control group around the steering wheel as well as a pair of slim 3 sectioned passenger seats which can be folded down to create a makeshift bed. However if Kombi Campers were to get our hands on this you can expect us to make a few small modifications of our own to boost the functionality and practicality of the vehicle as a place to both eat and sleep.
In terms of exterior design it seems as though designers have went to great lengths to ensure that the vehicle still has the look and feel of their long line of microbuses. Expect a basic box design with rounded lines, a bulldog nose with oversize VW logo, a gently curved windshield, a space-efficient wheels-at-the-corners stance, and 4 conventionally hinged side doors instead of rear sliders or the original T1 s dual French rear doors.
As far as performance goes no one really knows for sure except what VW have released about the vehicle themselves. The Volkswagen Microbus will be 3,500 pound curb weight would be running from 0 to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds with the power of 189 pound feet of torque. Further, 170 h 2.5 liter in five-cylinder, 2000 hp 2.0 liter turbo-four and 145 hp 2.0 liter TDI turbodiesel-four will equipped by Front wheel Drive. The six-speed manual and six-speed automatic function are both available.
We’re sure that as that as we get closer to 2017 more details will be released, including an official release date. Pricing has also yet to be confirmed but expect it to be anywhere between £20,000 to £28,000. We’ll make sure to post any news as soon as hear it but we’d also love to hear your thoughts as well as any rumour you may have heard! You can comment below, on facebook or on Twitter @KombiCampers.
Thanks again for reading and as always,
